The broad wedge-shaped site featured a steep vegetated dune climbing 6 meters to the rear and remnant coastal Moonah trees at the front, providing a distinctive natural context.
Design Brief: The objective was to create an enduring 4-bedroom holiday house that harmonized with its coastal environment. The design was intended to be both stylish and robust, offering high amenity and serviceability. This house was envisioned as a long-term investment, serving the dual purpose of accommodating a growing family and functioning as a part-time rental property.
Architectural Features:
Contextual Integration: The architectural response meticulously respected and enhanced the site's natural features, seamlessly integrating the vegetated dune and preserving the Moonah trees within the landscape strategy.
Materiality and Aesthetics: The material palette was selected for its durability and ability to withstand the harsh coastal conditions while maintaining a refined and stylish appearance. This included the use of resilient, high-quality materials that age gracefully over time.
Spatial Versatility: The spatial configuration was designed to adapt to the evolving needs of a growing family and the demands of a rental property. Flexible spaces were created to provide a balance between communal living areas and private retreats.
Indoor-Outdoor Connectivity: Emphasizing seamless indoor-outdoor connections, the design featured expansive glazing, outdoor terraces, and integrated landscaping to blur the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces.
High Amenity and Comfort: The house boasted a laminate black-butt chef's kitchen, stone and tile surfaces, and state-of-the-art climate control systems, including integrated heating and cooling, to ensure year-round comfort and ease of maintenance.
The architectural vision aimed to create a timeless residence that would serve as a cherished family retreat and a sought-after rental property, responding elegantly to its coastal context and the demands of modern living.

Stylish alterations and additions to the rear elevate this Edwardian timber villa from modest family home to the ultimate contemporary family residence.
An extensive renovation to a two-bedroom cottage in the heart of St Kilda resulted in a slick and stylish townhouse.
The brief was to open up the small spaces and convoluted floorplan and create an airy living/kitchen/dining area, as well as two bedrooms and a study.
The resulting living area is light and bright, with full height sliding glass doors opening up to the deck beyond. This creates a true indoor/outdoor environment that feels a lot larger than it is.
Entering the first bedroom the eye is drawn to the claw foot bath, sitting underneath the windows overlooking the deck, and to the curved wall which cunningly creates space on the other side for a European laundry and linen storage.
An elegant bathroom is warmed up by the use of timber cladding on one wall, an example of the changing textures throughout the home. Other highlights include feature lighting, a sleek and stylish black kitchen with Smeg appliances and an exposed brick wall in the study - one of the remaining links to the old home.
This award winning home in Highett began with the brief to create a family home in Highett with the capacity to stretch to fit changing circumstances. With two small children at the moment, the brief was to include four bedrooms, home office and large garage, as well as flexible living spaces that could withstand the rough and tumble of small children while being stylish and contemporary.
The result is a twin gabled, weatherboard facade - an unprepossessing reinterpretation of the predominant style of housing in the area. The vibrant orange front door leads into the house and creates a sense of fun on arrival.
Once you enter the home there is a sense of space, with high ceilings, generously proportioned rooms and a simple but extremely stylish interior.
The success of the home is measured by the clients happiness with their family home, but in addition the BDAV New Home of the Year 2014 and the Bayside Built Environment Awards Best New Building 2014.
